Introduction

Alwar Mewat Institute of Education & Development (AMIED) was established with the mission ‘to participate in the formation of an egalitarian, progressive and enlightened society by contributing in the process of evolution of a system equitable and quality education and development for all Children’ in 2000. It has been working to meet the educational needs of children especially girls of socially excluded and economically vulnerable communities in rural Rajasthan. The children and young girls are in the centre stage of all interventions of the organization, and core activities address their basic survival and educational needs by adopting child-centric and inclusive approach through creation of social and gender sensitive child-friendly environment. The current focus is to empower adolescent girls through education-based initiative to address age-appropriate educational learning needs by integrating the relevant cross-cutting issues like reproductive and sexual health and hygiene with the curriculum transaction.

The Key Problem being addressed by the organization is that formal educational set up and mainstream education systems are either not available to the children or non-functional especially in rural areas of Mewat (Alwar) and Tribal areas (Karauli) where Muslim, Dalit and tribal children especially the girls are being discriminated in every aspect of life and there is wide spread apathy in the rural communities toward the education of their children. In the Dang area of Karauli district every second girl gets married before age of marriage.

AMIED tries to address the issue through working on Adolescent Girls education and their empowerment, Early child marriage, declining sex ratio, discrimination against girls and women on gender basis, Adolescent sexual and reproductive health and quality education of children especially out-of-school girls and enrolled in government schools.

AMIED’s Approach is community-based and Rights-based. It works with community to have a sustainable effect of the programs, creates peoples’ organization like Mewat Shiksha Panchyat , women’s groups and adolescent forums in villages. It also works to strengthening the PRIs in order to ensure the education of the children in future. Gender inclusion is important area of the organization’s strategy for which it works for mass mobilization through campaigns and people’s conventions with the women’s participation in the process of social development. Three CBOs created at village level under proposed Project. All of these CBOs are related to School , ICDS and Health centers . We ensure their involvement in SMC/SDMCs , Women’s groups at AWCs and Adolescents girls group will be ASHA . We connected these groups of these institutional organisation which sustain after our project .

It’s networking efforts with other CSOs for advocacy on policy issues at various levels directed towards ensuring benefits for people from various laws and legislations, guarantees and provisions placed there by Government for ensuring legal entitlements of people in context of quality education.
